Benidorm in September & October: Why Autumn Is the Best-Kept Secret on the Costa Blanca

If you've only ever considered Benidorm in July or August, you're missing out on something genuinely special. Benidorm in September and October is a completely different experience — warmer sea, emptier beaches, lower prices, and a town that finally breathes again. Autumn is one of the best times of year in Benidorm.
So what exactly can you expect?
The Weather in Benidorm in September and October
Let's start with the numbers, because they're genuinely impressive. September in Benidorm averages around 29°C during the day, dropping to a comfortable 22°C at night. The sea temperature in early September is still hovering around 26°C — warmer than the Mediterranean gets in the height of summer in many parts of Europe. You'll swim every day without a second thought.
October cools slightly, averaging around 24–25°C during the day, with sea temperatures still sitting comfortably at 23°C through most of the month. Rain does become more possible towards the end of October — the Costa Blanca gets its occasional dramatic storms — but the vast majority of days are still gloriously sunny. Statistically, Benidorm sees around 8 hours of sunshine per day in September and 6–7 hours in October. That is not a bad holiday by anyone's standard.
Compared to the sweaty 36°C peak of August, September feels like the city has taken a long, cool breath. The heat is warm and pleasant rather than punishing.
The Beaches Are a Different World
If you've ever tried to find a spot on Playa Levante in the first week of August, you'll know why. The beach is beautiful, but in peak summer you're essentially lying in a human car park.
By mid-September, Levante and Poniente both thin out dramatically. Spanish school holidays end in the first week of September, and the British and Northern European summer rush is largely over. You can walk down to the beach at 10am and genuinely choose where you want to sit. The chiringuitos (beach bars) are still open, the sun loungers are still available for hire, and the water is at its very best.
Mal Pas beach, the little secret cove tucked beneath the old town headland, becomes genuinely accessible in September — in August, you're practically standing on each other's shoulders. In autumn, you might share it with just a handful of other people. Go on a Wednesday morning and you might feel like you have the Mediterranean to yourself.
What's Still Open (Everything That Matters)
One of the myths about visiting Benidorm outside peak summer is that everything closes. This is simply not true, which is one of the reasons September and October are such good months to visit.
Aqualandia and Aquanatura water parks both run through to late September. Check their closing dates before you book, but historically both stay open until at least the last week of September. For families visiting in early-to-mid September, both are still very much on the table.
Terra Mítica, the region's biggest theme park, runs through October. September and October are actually ideal months to visit — shorter queues, the same rides, and the same jaw-dropping Sierra Helada views from the top of the bigger attractions.
The Benidorm Palace dinner show — one of the most iconic evenings you can have in this town — runs year-round. Book ahead regardless of month; it fills up faster than people expect.
Restaurants across the Old Town and the seafront are all still operating at full capacity through September and well into October. In fact, many chefs and restaurateurs will tell you September is their favourite month — the pressure is off, the kitchen can breathe, and the food is often at its best. Try Casa Modesto in the Casco Antiguo for rice dishes that will genuinely make you emotional, or El Barco on the seafront for fresh fish that arrived on the boat this morning.
The Prices Are Significantly Lower
This is the part that converts most people once they hear it. A holiday rental in Benidorm in September can be 20–35% cheaper than the exact same property in August. If you're flexible on dates and you're travelling without school-age children (or your children's school allows term-time holidays), this is one of the biggest savings you can make on a Costa Blanca holiday.

What to Do in Benidorm in September and October
Autumn opens up activities that are genuinely uncomfortable in August's peak heat. Hiking the Sierra Helada Natural Park, the dramatic headland that separates Benidorm from Altea, is spectacular in September. The coastal trail from the Rincón de Loix neighbourhood gives you views over both bays simultaneously — do it in the early morning, take water, and you'll understand why people move here.
The Wednesday and Sunday markets continue through autumn — they're actually easier to browse when you're not fighting through August crowds. The flea market on Avenida de la Comunitat Valenciana (Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings) is also worth a visit.
September is also when the local fiestas come into their own along the Costa Blanca. While Benidorm's own patron saint festival falls in November, the surrounding towns go big in autumn. Altea's fiestas in September are beautiful — just 15 minutes up the coast on the TRAM — and Villajoyosa has its own quieter celebrations that give you a genuine window into Valencian culture away from the tourist belt.
For couples especially, October in Benidorm is close to perfect. The Poniente promenade at sunset in late October is a good example: golden light, often warm enough to sit outside and quiet enough to hear each other.
Practical Tips for Autumn in Benidorm
Pack layers for the evenings. September evenings are still warm enough for a light dress or shirt, but by late October you'll want a jacket for after dinner. The locals start bringing out their winter coats at 20°C, which always amuses visitors from northern Europe.
Book a car if you can. September and October are ideal months to explore beyond Benidorm — the traffic is manageable, parking is easier, and the surrounding towns like Guadalest, Callosa d'en Sarrià, and the Fonts de l'Algar waterfalls are stunning in autumn light. Rental cars are also cheaper in shoulder season.
The TRAM is still running on its full schedule through autumn — it connects Benidorm to Alicante and the villages in between, and it's one of the most scenic short train journeys in Spain. A return to Altea costs just a couple of euros.
